This is one of a number of drawings like this I have made now. I have documented on video to try and illustrate the process of the making. As I was thinking about this in relation to ‘absence’, my mind went back to the mind map I made. In association with the word absence, I think of an empty space, a void, but at the same time the act of emptying is to make void. The marks on the paper are evidence of that act, but they are also very fragile and could easily disappear.
The drawing was made on A2 cartridge paper. And as I think about how I might display such a work, I am tempted to consider showing the pile of resultant charcoal along side. There is an ambiguity between the nature of the drawing and the linear quality of the sticks of charcoal.
