Sneak preview- ‘Oceans’ by Tania Kovats

As part of the SAW artist talk with Jo Lathwood, there was an advertised sneak preview of Tania Kovat’s ‘Oceans’ exhibition.

In ‘Oceans’, originally organised and presented by The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, Kovats  uses the natural world both as her subject and her material. She approaches the natural environment both in terms of identifiable places – sites that can be mapped, named, inhabited and scrutinised – and as matter with properties that can be subjected to external forces and potential transformations.’

The exhibition was being installed ready for it opening on the 11th October at Hestercombe so we only got to see 3 rooms, but never the less got a flavour of the work. I was particularly excited to see it as I have just finished reading Kovat’s book, ‘Drawing water- drawing as mechanism for exploration’. This was published to coincide with the exhibition in Edingburgh. I had read it to consider how she had approached exploring her subject- water, as I think about the place ‘willow’ has taken in my work. The book brings together her own work, thoughts and ideas, along side images and texts from

map-makers, writers, shipbulders, whalers, soliders, sailors, artists, archeologists, cartographers, scientists, uranographers, engineers, and dreamers’.

It gives an insight to all that she has looked at and considered in the exploration of her subject, and perhaps adds depth and gravitas to her work. It also acknowledges the part these do-ers and thinkers play in the conversation around the subject, that is after all on-going. Really excited by the idea on being able to see the exhibition, Edinburgh was always going to be a bit too far to travel. I have also found that Kovats will be giving a talk in November, so have booked my ticket already.
